You can't beat the beauty and warmth of solid oak flooring. Fitted correctly it will last indefinitely, with the look improving as it matures with age. Fitted incorrectly, with gaps at the edges and around architraves etc it will look an eyesore and be money down the drain.
Different looks can be obtained depending on the layout, I prefer to alternate rows as shown in these photos but some customers prefer a more random look.

Solid wood is very easy too keep clean in comparison with carpets. A regular vacuum and wipe off any spills with a damp cloth. Whilst most customers prefer to let their flooring age, it is really quite easy to rent a floor sander and go over the whole lot before re-sealing to maintain the new look.
